Teaching Self Control: Martin Henley has created a curriculum for teaching students the self-control skills they need to control impulses, manage group situations, and adapt to school routines. The Teaching Self-Control  curriculum includes role-plays, simulations, learning center activities, and children's literature that can be used to teach those skills. Henley's curriculum offers specific lesson plans for teaching 20 concepts of self-control. Each lesson includes an activity for introducing the concept and a va riety of cross-curricular activities for reinforcing it.

Get Your Passport Ready For A World of Breakfast! The month of March brings us St. Patrick’s Day and spring. It also brings National School Breakfast Week, the week of March 5-9. This year’s theme is "A World of School Breakfasts." The week is a chance for students across the country to sample the breakfast foods their peers around the world eat every day. This also is a great way to engage students in nutrition and geography lessons. Check out the newly launched NSBW 2007 web site that includes official NSBW '07 menus, activit y sheets, logos, a press release, and toolkit to help you prepare your special events and promotions in your school.

Works4Mepractical classroom tips from real experts -- your colleagues! Marching to the Beat - From Marsha Strong, a Pre K/Varying Exceptionalities teacher at MetroWest Elementary School in Orlando, Florida:
"To increase auditory skills, I use a small wood drum to beat slowly and then more quickly. The children march to the beat until they are running. It's great not only for auditory skill development, but also as a gross motor game."

Tax Information You May Find Beneficial: Tax time is just around the corner, and we want to make sure that you are aware of a few tax-related programs that may be beneficial to you: the Earned Income Credit, the Saver’s Tax Credit and the IRS Free File program. The Earned Income Credit is a tax credit for people who earn less than $38,348 a year. A tax credit usually means more money in your pocket because it reduces your tax obligation. You may even get a refund. Download this IRS document to see if you qualify. The Saver's Credit is a nonrefundable and permanent tax credit available to eligible taxpayers who earn $50,000 or less and make salary-deferral contributions to their employer-sponsored 401(k), 403(b), SIMPLE, SEP or governmental 457 plan, and/or make contributions to their traditional and/or Roth IRAs. The credit is 10 percent to 50 percent of the individual's eligible contribution of up to $2,000, which means it cannot be more than $1,000Learn more about the Saver’s Tax Credit. Taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $52,000 or less can have their taxes prepared free through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Free File program on the IRS Web site .

Adding Balance to the Teacher Compensation Debate: When it comes to hard-to-staff schools, it's difficult to find the right answers unless you ask the right questions. For example: what can traditional schools learn from their private and charter counterparts when it comes to using teacher compensation as a tool for attracting and retaining high-quality educators? Take a moment to review the new report from the Center for American Progresson "Teac her Compensation in Charter and Private Schools". The report examines innovative alternatives, including approaches built on union-district cooperation in places like Dade County, Fla.
