Mr. Politician / Make our schools a priority

Florida's educators strive to give every student the chance to experience a world class public education. But there are many obstacles getting in the way of this goal, such as large class sizes, less time for teaching, old textbooks and the list goes on and on.

Empty promises from elected officials, like Mr. Politician, have led to many cutbacks in our public schools. You can read more about backhanded ways that he and others are using to destroy our public schools by selecting "Meet a Real Threat." The effects of Mr. Politician's priorities will have long-lasting, negative impacts on our public schools if we don't act now.

We have a long, storied tradition of providing the best to our students and now is not the time to turn our backs on public education. We must make our public schools a priority.

What's at stake

Every day, in every classroom across the state, Florida educators are providing our students with a world-class education. We owe it to the children of our state to give them access to an education that will give them the best chance to develop their potential.

But bigger class sizes, less time for student-teacher interaction, mandated paperwork, inadequate resources, staff cuts and fewer class choices will have a lasting negative impact on our children.

We can stop those things from happening by making our schools a priority!

We need to keep our veteran teachers from leaving the classroom.
We need to make sure students get the individualized attention they need.
We need to ensure a well-rounded education for all students.
We need to keep our classrooms up-to-date.
We need to give our teachers more time to teach and students more time to learn.

Now is the time to get involved in our schools and talk with your elected officials and school administrators about what is happening to our schools. Now is NOT the time to let education take a back seat. We must invest in our schools to give our students the world class education they deserve.

How we can succeed

The Florida public schools we have today are the result of the investments, ingenuity, and commitment of our community. It's imperative to the future of our children's education that we continue the tradition of creating and maintaining great schools.

Sharing your thoughts with elected officials and school administrators is an important tool to reach our objective. So, get to know your school board officials, school administrators, and local and state lawmakers. Send them e-mails and call them to discuss your concerns about anything from class sizes to staffing cuts.

Our leaders need to know what's happening in the hallways of our schools, and your first-hand experiences are perfect examples. Don't be shy; share your thoughts with the people who are making decisions about the future of our schools. Your input is invaluable.
