Do You Have a Student Teacher in Your Classroom?

If you do, please let him/her know that as a university student he/she qualifies to be a member of the Student FEA/NEA program.  Enrolling is easy, just go to https://sites.nea.org/JoinNea/ and join. For $31 a year, students receive Educators Employment Liability Insurance and $1 million professional liability insurance and representation from trained education advocates and attorneys who specialize in Florida Law.  Additionally, members receive the same benefits as an FEA/NEA/AFT member, including the FEA Access card which provides up to $1,500 per year in savings.

Any student who is preparing to be an educator may join Student FEA.  This includes student interns, student teachers, students enrolled in the college of education, or simple a student in the math department who is planning to become a teacher.  Students currently under an employment contract with a public school system are not eligible for student membership.  Student members also have the option of attending the Student FEA conference and if

TEACHER ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Teacher Assessment Committee has now met two times, February 24 and March 15, with additional meetings being scheduled shortly.

The first meeting was a review of the purpose and anticipated outcomes leading to a FAIR AND EQUITABLE ASSESSMENT FORM AND SYSTEM. The committee members reviewed the relationship between RTTT and pending legislation, the new Florida Educator Accomplished Practices, the current assessment instrument, Florida Statute 1012.34, and identified issues and concerns allowing for transparency in the evaluation process. The Teacher Effectiveness component and the Student Achievement component were also reviewed. SEA provided a provided a powerpoint presentation describing the Value-Added Models, which the State is reviewing, also. The committee broke into different groups to discuss the above areas.

SEA Appoints Teachers to Help Create New Evaluation
The current teacher evaluation form in Seminole County will need to be modified in order to comply with requirements set forth by Race to the Top, by the Florida Department of Education, and quite possibly by future legislation. Recently, the SEA and the District agreed to establish a Teacher Evaluation Committee composed of teachers and District personnel who would participate in the development of the new evaluation instrument. After sending out a call for volunteers to serve on this committee, the response from SEA members was overwhelming. In fact, more than 100 teachers responded indicating interest. The following teachers, who represent a cross section of the teaching unit, have been appointed to represent the interests of our district's teachers for this critical task:

KT Caldwell, Maureen Waitt, Tracey Albert, Kasey Ostrosky, Darleen Brown, Chris Tipton, Kay Boehart, Rosemary Keene , Deborah Partridge, Nona Phillips, Sue Carson, Erin Lollar, Pam Sherry, Hawley Jervis, Kristen Springfield, Cheryl Osteen, Louise Levy, Laurie Munoz, Felicia Naidu, Harriet Fossitt, Megan Grubbs, Sophie Garrity, Lois Arp, Edmund Young, Dan Smith, Rob Rusin, Connie Britton, Phi Yoba, Chris Trevett, Randy Allman, Sandy San Miguel

The first meeting for this committee is scheduled for Thursday, February 24th, and there are plans for this group to meet again as needed in the coming months. Please check the SEA website for more information as it develops.
